60% of Under-5s Have Preventable Tooth Decay. We Built Something About It.
The Stat That Started Everything
60% of children under five in the UK have preventable tooth decay.
Let that land. Not 6%. Sixty percent. A majority of young children are developing cavities that didn’t need to happen. And the worst part? Most parents don’t notice until it’s too late: when the appointment becomes an extraction rather than a prevention.
Here’s why: the average gap between dental check-ups for young children is 12 to 18 months. That’s a year and a half of development, teething, diet changes, and potential issues; all happening invisibly between appointments. By the time a parent spots something, the window for simple intervention has usually closed.
The Gap No One’s Filling
As parents, we track everything. Weight, height, sleep patterns, first words, first steps. There are apps for milestones, feeding schedules, and nappy contents. But teeth? The thing that causes more childhood hospital admissions than any other single condition? We’re expected to just… wait for the next appointment and hope for the best.
That felt wrong to us.
We started asking: what if parents could do a quick monthly check from home? Not a diagnosis (that’s a dentist’s job) but a simple early-warning system. Something that could spot the subtle signs (a white patch here, slight discolouration there) that trained eyes would catch but untrained ones miss.
Introducing Miloh
Miloh is now available as a free preview on the App Store.
The concept is straightforward: snap a photo of your baby’s gums or teeth, and AI analyses the image using a traffic-light system:
- Green: Everything looks healthy. Keep doing what you’re doing.
- Amber: Early signs worth monitoring. Here’s what to watch for.
- Red: Book an appointment. Here’s what to tell your dentist.
No medical jargon. No ambiguity. Just clear guidance on what to do next.
Why “Preview”?
We’re calling this a preview because we believe in shipping early and iterating with real parents. The core functionality works (photo capture, AI analysis, results with guidance, timeline storage) but we want to refine the experience based on how families actually use it.
What’s working now:
- Add multiple children to one account
- Guided photo capture with positioning overlay
- AI analysis in under 3 seconds
- Save results to a timeline for tracking over time
- Clinical sources from NHS, BSPD, and NICE
What’s coming:
- Android version
- Richer timeline insights
- Milestone tracking integration
- Community features for parents
Privacy Without Compromise
Health apps and privacy are a minefield. We took a hard line: no child names, dates of birth, or personal information ever leaves your device to reach the AI. Photos are processed with zero identifying data attached. Everything is stored locally first, and encrypted in transit.
GDPR compliant. COPPA compliant. No data selling. No ad tracking. No dark patterns to keep you in the app longer than you need to be.
Your child’s health data is exactly that: yours.
The Bigger Picture
Miloh isn’t trying to replace dentists. Quite the opposite; it’s trying to get more children to the dentist sooner, when intervention is simple rather than surgical. Early detection means early action. Early action means less trauma, less cost, and healthier kids.
We think about it like a smoke alarm. It doesn’t fight fires. It gives you time to act before the fire spreads.
Try It Free
Miloh is available now as a free download on the App Store. No subscription. No paywall. Just a tool that does what it says.
If you’re a parent of a baby or toddler, give it a try. Take your first photo. See your first result. And if you spot something amber, you’ll be glad you checked.
Miloh is a wellness tool, not a medical device. It encourages professional consultation and never replaces clinical advice. Learn more at getmiloh.com.
